Nearshoring is useful when lead time, replenishment and production visibility matter enough to offset a potentially higher unit price. Türkiye can be a strong option for European buyers, but the business case should be calculated by product and supplier rather than treated as a general rule.
Compare replenishment time, not slogans
Road freight from western Türkiye can be materially faster than intercontinental sea freight, although border queues, route, consolidation and customs procedures affect every shipment. Buyers should compare door-to-door transit, order frequency, inventory carrying cost and the cost of a late delivery—not only the quoted freight rate.
The Customs Union advantage
The EU–Türkiye Customs Union covers many industrial goods, subject to the correct classification and documentation. It does not mean that every product is duty-free or free of import formalities. Agricultural goods, certain processed products, trade-defence measures and origin rules need separate review.
Regulation is the new moat
The EU’s sustainability agenda — including ESPR, Digital Product Passport requirements and CBAM — increases the need for reliable product and supplier records. Some Turkish exporters already work with European documentation and testing requirements; others do not. Buyers should request evidence from the selected factory and product instead of relying on a country-level assumption.
Beyond textiles
Türkiye has established production in apparel, home textiles, furniture, automotive supply, machinery, metalworking and cosmetics. That breadth is useful for projects that combine several categories, but capability still varies by factory, process, quantity and certification.
The honest caveat
Türkiye will not be the lowest-cost source for every labour-intensive or high-volume product. It tends to be more relevant when buyers value shorter replenishment cycles, manageable development quantities, local production follow-up or access to a particular industrial cluster. MOQ, certification and compliance remain factory- and product-specific.
